In vitro analysis

In order to assess cosmetics, raw materials, and medical devices, the Cell Biology and Toxicology Laboratory at CMDC Lab conducts in-vitro safety and efficacy testing on certain cell lines and in-vitro rebuilt human tissue.

The large variety of protocols that are available enable testing of consumer goods and raw materials in accordance with ISO standards, OECD procedures, and GLP.

The Cell Biology Department staff can also create specialized experimental methods and investigate certain in-vitro models that enable testing of material based on their unique characteristics and uses.

Any chemical or microbiological analysis can be completed internally, enabling the execution of cross-disciplinary experiments.

Offering in-vitro safety testing, CMDC Labs

  • UNI EN ISO 10993-5-compliant cytotoxicity tests on cosmetics, chemicals, and medical devices.
  • Cytotoxicity testing: performed in accordance with UNI EN ISO 10993-5 for medical devices.
  • Testing for eye irritation using corneal epithelium from 3D-reconstructed monolayer cells.

  • Testing for skin corrosion: (OECD 431, 435).
  • Testing for percutaneous absorption (OECD 428).
  • Testing for skin sensitivity using dendritic cells and THP-1.
  • Cell monolayers are used in the OECD 432 phototoxicity experiment.
  • Mutagenesis in Ames tests (OECD 471).
  • The in vitro assay for carcinogenesis (OECD guidance paper no. 231).

  • Testing skin cells for antioxidant and antiradical activity (ROS analysis);
  • The es ORAC Test, a direct antioxidant activity assessment.

Testing for mitogenic activity, protein synthesis stimulation, and extracellular matrix (collagen, elastin, fibronectin, etc.) stimulation of protein synthesis are all used to assess the anti-ageing and redensifying activities of the skin.

  • Evaluation of the anti-inflammatory effects on skin cells and in-vitro recreated epithelia of various origins;
  • Analyzing the pro-inflammatory potential of cytokines and growth factors (GM-CSF, TNF-, IL-1, IL-1, IL-8);
  • Testing for cell proliferation using skin cells;
  • Melanogenesis modulation testing, which involves boosting or suppressing the production of melanin for depigmentation or pigmentation products;
  • Skin barrier testing on recreated skin; • Percutaneous absorption testing on skin constructed using the OECD 428 approach;
  • Testing the keratolytic effect on skin that has been rebuilt;
  • Endothelial cell and fibroblast wound healing activity testing (healing agents, stretch mark preventatives).
  • Immune response modulation testing, which involves examining specific mediators (such as histamine, IL-1, and TNF) for their anti-itch, sensitization-inhibiting, and immunostimulant properties;
